Carroll's HUNTER fit the bill perfectly in helping me to understand the real Hunter S. Thompson. Because the author spent time with him, and she includes extensive first-hand interviews with many people who knew him, the book really draws an outstanding portrait of what the guy was really like. A biography of the journalist who was the inspiration for Doonesbury's Uncle Duke features material culled from interviews with family, friends, ex-lovers. Then I read HUNTER: The Strange and Savage Life of Hunter S. Thompson. The author's personal connection to Hunter may just be the reason why this biography stands out among the rest. I find myself going back to it frequently and rereading sections that give me a clearer and deeper understanding about the events and circumstances in Hunter's.

This is a biography of Hunter S Thompson written in the Gonzo style. It has some interesting biographical information about Hunter. However, the Gonzo parts of the book are sorely lacking, they show just how short imitation can fall of the real thing and subject of the book. Hunter S.
